We
have nurseries in each of the estates. Plants are grown with great care
as planting is the most delicate and skilled operation in the cultivation
of coffee and initial care is very important as the plants once planted
will be in the field for 40 to 50 years.
Germination process: 60 - 70 days - 2 leaves stage: transplanted
into a polythene bag; 8"x5" in size - Grow to a height
of 40 feet but in order to enhance picking they are pruned and allowed
to grow as bushes (between 6 to 8 ft height) that lend themselves to mechanisation.
-Culling out of rogue plants and germs like diseases that plague
Arabica is the Leaf Rust (Hemelia Vestatrix) and a common pest white stem
Boxer - Planting (is nurtured in the ground for 5-7 years, 4 pair
leaf stage:transplanted into soil - 2 years later: first bunch of
cherries appear - Centering (tips of these plants are nipped to
encourage lateral growth this is to facilitate easy picking during harvest
and prevent branch or tree damage - Pruning. Pruning or handling
in also a very important enriching practice. Every year the severity of
the prune depends on the state of the wood and is normally carried over
just after the harvest when the vigour of the bush can be judged. Here,
the single stem system is followed and the multistem growth is not encouraged
- Manuring and Pest management - these processes involved time tested
attempts at understanding the soil productivity and enhancing methods
that restrict chemical use, thereby organic farming and compost and integrated
pest management are encouraged to great degree of effectiveness.
